Carolyn Cole "Photojournalist Of The Year"

NPPA’s Best Of Photojournalism 2007 competition judges named Carolyn Cole of the Los Angeles Times as the Photojournalist Of The Year. Tyler Hicks of The New York Times is second place, and third place is Spencer Platt of Getty Images.

Cole was also picked for Best Of Show/Picture Story for her essay on the conflict between Israel and Lebanon last summer. Contest judge Naomi Halperin said, "The picture story about Lebanon is not only well done, but the framing of each image builds tension into the situation, which I feel adds to the storytelling process."

Earlier in the Best Of Photojournalism 2007 contest, Cole also won first place in the International News Picture Story category for her essay.

"First place [POY] was a unanimous selection," judge James Colton said about Cole's top choice today. "I want everyone out there to realize this is a unanimous vote. There is no influence. The one thing that works for me in the first place portfolio is the photographer's use of color, in addition to the content and composition. The one unifying theme is that the photographer has a style and a great understanding of light and color."
